How mana whenua has influenced discussions at Ihumātao

Iwi advocate Pita Turei explores the history of Ihumātao and more recent plans to build on it. Te Kawerau ā Maki did not originally support the rezoning of Ōruarangi Road. Through negotiations with Fletcher Building, Te Kawerau ā Maki will have eight hectares of land returned, which will be protected, and will serve as a buffer between the tupuna maunga and new housing. This is the first-time privately-owned land has been returned to iwi at no cost.
